Much increased international presence
Information and communications technology is increasingly a key driver of innovation and growth in other sectors of industry, not least in mechanical engineering and the automobile industry. This is particularly evident in the case of machine-to-machine communication (M2M). The strong growth in this sector is mirrored in the M2M Zone that forms part of the display "Telematics & Automotive World" at CeBIT 2011. This year there is a noticeably increased international presence: for the first time 14 companies from twelve countries are represented in the line-up.
The M2M Zone in Hall 7 hosts presentations by network operators, suppliers of applications and solutions, and hardware manufacturers. Those taking part in this year's event include European mobile phone operators such as Orange/Mobistar, Telefónica O2 and KPN, equipment manufacturers such as Telit and Cinterion and specialist service providers like the satellite communications provider Skywave, the Command Control Center operator Pacific Controls and the virtual network operator Kore.
The Scandinavian supplier of wireless solutions Telenor Connexion AB is returning to CeBIT after a year away, and is exhibiting in the M2M Zone. "We have important international customers in key vertical markets such as the automobile industry, the healthcare industry and the energy sector. This event is one of the few where you can meet senior ICT officers from all sections of the market", says Robert Brunback, Head of Market Strategy at Telenor.
The increase in display area is another indicator of the industry's buoyant performance. This year's special display occupies twice as much floor space as it did at last year's CeBIT. The organizers of the M2M Zone are the M2M Alliance, the leading European industry association for M2M suppliers, and publishing company Horizon House.
The exhibition is accompanied by an M2M conference at the forum "CeBIT in Motion". The themes under discussion at the conference include best practices and case studies from the energy, automotive and transport sectors.
