iBurst, the South African wireless business solutions provider has become the 2nd MEF member in the country and joins founding member, MetroFibre networx.
“The demand for standardised Carrier Ethernet in the region is significant and set to grow rapidly,” said Gary Williams, Head of Pre-Sales Engineering at Metrofibre networx and Marketing Co-Chair for MEF in South Africa. ”
“Now that iBurst is a member, we can connect our networks together to provide greater reach, quality and service delivery to our corporate customers. We expect the remaining service providers in South Africa to follow suit in the weeks to come.According to Williams, a typical NNI (network to network interface) negotiation could take service providers months to hammer out, but with MEF standards, this process is shortened dramatically, speeding up network rollout so that enterprise customers can have assured QoS and SLAs in place rapidly.
In addition, the MEF has announced that 16 professionals from Vodacom, Neotel, MTN, Metrofibre networx and IBurst have obtained MEF-CECP (MEF Certified Carrier Ethernet Professionals) certification , qualifiying them to implement MEF standards across the different networks, rapidly speeding up the process of cross-network interconnect.
“We are proud to be among the first MEF members to provide carrier ethernet services over the last mile using wireless, and with MEF-CECP professionals, iBurst now has a distinct competitive advantage in South Africa,” says Ronald Bartels, Head of Services at iBurst.
“We are now able to extend our reach and develop Layer 2 services and build a significant Carrier Ethernet Exchange in the country.”
“We can add vital added features, including multiple classes of service, greater manageability and easier interconnect, enabling new levels of efficiency for mobile backhaul, making it easier for a large number of access providers to join the Carrier Ethernet community.”
