discuss & discover: Cornerstone in place for 2010

Messe München is reporting positive results for the premiere of discuss & discover, the new business-to-business event for the IT industry
When it comes to the number of visitors, the organizer's ambitious goals were not quite reached, but ratings among participants and visitors verified that the new event was of superior quality and has a great deal of potential for developing into the most important platform for the IT industry. 75 percent of the visitors surveyed by infratest were positive in their assessment of the various modules. According to initial analyses of the visitors' profiles, the share of decision-makers was very high at approximately 80 percent, which may be indicative of the growth potential that this event has to offer. Approximately 30 percent of those visitors stated that they are top-level executives in their companies.
The eagerly anticipated new platform for the IT sector has passed its litmus test. Klaus Dittrich, Managing Director of Messe München, had these initial comments regarding the event's results: "We set some ambitious goals in difficult times, and unfortunately, we were not able to reach all of them. The quality of the events was very good in every respect, even difficult to surpass in many cases. Naturally we are not satisfied with the number of visitors – which was approximately 6,000 – and will now work with our partners, users and market experts to determine what adjustments need to be made."
Besides the general state of the economy, the event's new, unfamiliar format was an additional hurdle to satisfying people's high expectations out of the starting blocks. The fact that the overall event is so multifaceted and flexible had manufacturers and the IT industry convinced, even while the event was still in development. But according to Dittrich, "We have to emphasize the added value that discuss & discover has to offer trade visitors more strongly and communicate that in detail."
discuss & discover 2010: Make use of entire potential
The majority of the participants and visitors felt that the overall concept was both successful and future-oriented. For Stan Sugarman, Head of the Advertisement and Multimedia Division at Gruner & Jahr, discuss & discover is "the perfect platform for an exchange of information on the most important innovations between suppliers and users of IT." Klaus Dittrich: "We are completely convinced that this event is exactly what the IT industry needs. We believe in the format and its utility for all participants and will continue to develop discuss & discover shoulder to shoulder with the IT industry, users and analysts to make it their most important business to business platform."
Microsoft was positive about its presence at discuss & discover. According to Achim Berg, General Manager of Microsoft Deutschland GmbH, "We are very satisfied with the 520 participants that we had at our conference. We took advantage of the synergies that the new concept created together with our company event, lectures at the conference and a comprehensive exhibit for introducing Windows 7, Office 2010 and the Microsoft Sharepoint Server 2010. Participating in discuss & discover was definitely worthwhile."
Initial analyses of the visitors' profiles indicate that the event was very well received by decision-makers. They accounted for approximately 80 percent of all visitors, and 30 percent of them are top-level executives in their companies. The independent market-research company infratest determined that most of the visitors had a positive opinion of the event modules. All in all, given its high-quality concept, content, visitors and exhibitors, discuss & discover has put itself in a good starting position among events for the IT industry.
discuss & discover Conference: Platform for the international league in IT
Thanks to its internationally renowned speakers and first-rate program of events, the conference was a genuine highlight at discuss & discover. More than one thousand visitors took advantage of the opportunity to gather information about visions, trends, practical applications and market developments and to be inspired. However, Klaus Dittrich is certain that the conference deserved better attendance, given the high level of topics and speakers. "It is almost impossible to surpass what the 2009 conference had to offer." Klaus von den Hoff, Director of the Global TIME Division at Arthur D. Little: "The 2009 discuss & discover Conference featured superior-quality lectures and discussions."
Corporate events: Booked to capacity and high attendance
The corporate events were the module in the overall event that met with the best response. According to their respective hosts, the approximately ten conferences and congresses ran very smoothly and reached their audiences as well as their goals. According to estimates, more than one thousand guests from Germany and abroad participated. "As far as we are concerned, discuss and discover was the perfect place to hold the OVAB Europe 3rd Munich Digital Signage Conference. The new event concept and the exhibition area's close proximity to the conference center gave international visitors at our event a chance to take a quick and uncomplicated look at the latest IT trends. discuss & discover's consistent B2B orientation and its strong link to the congress proved to be strong and have a promising future," explained Florian Rotberg, Senior Project Manager at invidis consulting GmbH.
"BITKOM held six events and conferences at discuss & discover," summarized Bernhard Rohleder, Managing Director of the trade association. "All of BITKOM's events had very good attendance and were very well received by participants. discuss & discover 2009 gave BITKOM an outstanding platform.”
Public Forum: Extensive program of events very well received
The public lecture and discussion forum in Hall B0 was extremely well attended and featured a diverse program of events including roundtable discussions on nearly all the hot topics in the IT industry. For the most part, it was standing room only in the auditorium. There was a great deal of demand among companies, agencies and consultants that wanted to meet and participate in the dialog. They made presentations either to complement their exhibition stands or as an alternative to exhibiting or making a presentation at the conference. For Ralf Schneider, CIO of Allianz Deutschland, the forum was valuable for another reason: "The discuss & discover Public Forum is fertile ground for discussing specific aspects of modern IT and innovations."
Exhibition: A small trade show with big brand names
Visitors also had a chance to gather information about the latest products, solutions and technologies in the categories "Mobility & Collaboration", "Infrastructure & Security" and "IT as a Service". In their initial reactions, most of the exhibitors in this module were satisfied with the quality of the contacts that they made and the profound discussions that they had with trade visitors in a serious business atmosphere. The Microsoft stand, where visitors could take a closer look at Microsoft Office 2010 and Windows 7, was a very popular attraction. However, the Integralis Solution Campus also generated a great deal of attention: it featured more than one hundred security solutions that provided trade visitors with helpful information directly from the source. Dr. Matthias Rosche, Director Consulting Central Europe, Integralis Deutschland GmbH: "discusss & discover is the first step away from a classic exhibition concept in favor of an event that emphasizes interactivity and socializing. Unfortunately, some of our invited customers and other interested parties were unable to keep the appointments that they made at the fair because their travel budgets have been cut so dramatically. This is very unfortunate, especially when you consider the high quality of the conference program and the corporate events."
Online: Off to a good start
The entirely new "Online" module in the event's new concept also got off to a good start. With events like BarcampMunich and webcific, the agenda was full both prior to and during discuss & discover. "The webcific initiative for relevant communication in the midst of media change appears to be entirely in keeping with the times." The organizers of the new platform, Richard Joerges and Ingo Becker, who are experts for PR communications and social media, were thrilled, "The premiere of the media camp, which coincided with the beginning of Munich Web Week and the first Media Day at discuss & discover, were extremely well received."
During discuss & discover, the blogger lounge was a busy meeting place for bloggers, casters and journalists when they were not twittering live from the events they were attending. Attendance was also high at the opening keynote by Don Tapscott, the author of pioneering theories about how information technology is changing society. discuss & discover also posted regular news updates on Twitter (discussdiscover, #dnd09) and its own blog. The discuss & discover website and the blog will remain a communications forum for the IT and Internet community even after the event is over, so they will also make a valuable contribution to the form and content of discuss & discover in October 2010.
