KPN International extends MPLS network in the US and UK

KPN International has implemented significant advances for its MPLS network solutions. This has been achieved by activating seven new Points-of-Presence (PoP) in the US and the UK. In parallel KPN International has quadrupled its transatlantic sea-cable capacity. Both corporate and wholesale customers of KPN International will benefit from the improved connectivity and faster speeds which result from this network upgrade.
Customers will gain immediate access to US network performance of up to multiple 10 Gbit/s. The US PoPs are located in Chicago, Dallas, San Jose, New York, Miami and Ashburn (Virginia) and the UK PoP in Manchester. The development adds 12,000 kilometers to the KPN International network, bringing the total to over 120,000 km.
The complete upgrade has been precisely engineered. By connecting Amsterdam, Paris, Manchester and London directly to the US backbone, the upgrade will deliver traffic via the shortest routes. By establishing direct IP connectivity between Europe and the US which is four times faster than the current standard, KPN International prepares the ground for immediate innovation.
Enhanced business connectivity will, for example, encourage enterprises operating on both sides of the Atlantic to look seriously at getting more out of the Internet with services such as web-TV and multi-point conferencing. The IP transit service is IPv6 compliant, ensuring a high degree of future-readiness for wholesale customers who also include international and regional carriers, broadband and content delivery network providers
For Carolien Nijhuis, KPN International Managing Director, this development is both timely and strategic: ‘We are currently enjoying a regular 200% annual growth in network traffic, and this has been most dramatic in North America where traffic has quadrupled. By significantly augmenting capability in the US and upgrading our transatlantic links now, we are investing in our own and our customers’ ongoing future growth. We want our customers to be ready to take advantage of new business opportunities.’
