Date: Thu, 03/26/2009 - 11:18
Barack Obama and Britney Spears are the most important man and woman on the Web. The US President has earned over 290 million references, whereas the pop star has reached 77 million. Both lead the ranking of the WIP (Web Important People) on theWIPlist.com (www.thewiplist.com), a new website which measures people's importance according to the number of times they have been quoted on the Internet.
Who is more popular: Hillary or Bill Clinton, Rihanna or Beyonce, Oprah Winfrey or David Letterman…? theWIPlist.com, the English version of the popular Spanish site, lalistaWIP.com, allows users to compare the fame and popularity of celebrities throughout the world and see how it evolves over time. Each celebrity has his or her own flashcard with basic information including personal data and the latest news stories.
theWIPlist.com uses bots to explore the web and check hundreds of thousands of pages every day. Once the bots have surfed the Web, they make use of statistical techniques to gather information and analyse the resulting data. Bots check a wide range of websites, but they pay special attention to news sites and blogs in order to reflect the pulse of public opinion.
“We have implemented bots with semantic web technology capable of contextually locating, documenting and measuring the presence of different personalities. Bots can tell when a site refers to George Bush father, Bush Jr or the word ‘bush,” as the developer Julio Casal explains.
TheWIPlist.com offers specific lists of politicians and musicians, as well as actors, scientists, writers and TV presenters. This new portal includes rankings of 185 countries and 90 categories such as Art, Music, Gastronomy, Technology, for example.
This site includes over 50,000 celebrities from all around the world and 600,000 different lists of the most important online celebrities. TopWIP 100 is the general raking of the WIPlist.com including the Web's most important personalities regardless of their category, country or area of activity.
