Cylance®, the company that is revolutionizing cybersecurity through the use of artificial intelligence to proactively prevent advanced persistent threats and malware, announced that its next Unbelievable World Tour stop will include a live demonstration of detecting — and stopping — an actual ransomware attack.
Ransomware is one of the biggest security threats of 2016. It most often occurs when malware finds its way onto an end-user computer, most often as a result of clicking on a link in an email, visiting a malicious website, or inserting an infected USB key. Software is then installed onto the client computer that blocks access to critical data, often through encryption. A message then tells the end-user that unless a payment is made using an undetectable means such as Bitcoin, the user will never gain access to the decryption key, and will never see his/her data again.
Call it Ransomware-as-a-Service: It can attack and cripple servers and entire data centers, in addition to individual laptop and desktop computers. The threat grew tremendously in 2015, and is set to increase significantly this year. As reported in the Los Angeles Times, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center paid a US$17,000 ransom to unlock their servers and data in February 2016. In that same month, Forbes discussed a fast-spreading ransomware called Locky that is infecting as many as 100,000 computers per day, and which demands up to US$420 per computer to unlock users’ files.
Evan Davidson, Vice President of EMEA sales said: “Where 2015 was the year of the mega breaches like Talk Talk, Sony and Ashley Madison, 2016 is the year of ransomware. With 15 new variants this year alone, 2016 is already shaping up to be a frighteningly lucrative year for cybercriminals, where any person with a computer can be exploited and used as a revenue source with the potential for vast profits.
Cylance has developed an innovative way of stopping malware executing on your machine with a light weight agent that predicts and prevents these threats using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Cylance has broken down the DNA of malware to an almost molecular level to help understand to a high degree of accuracy whether an application is good or bad, whether the malware has previously been encountered or not. We provide our customers with the most comprehensive endpoint and data security solutions to protect their data and prevent advanced persistent threats without hampering productivity and mobility.”
Cylance is attacking the ransomware challenge head-on, and in an industry first, will demonstrate its abilities to detect and protect against ransomware in a live setting during its next Unbelievable Tour stop. The demonstration will be taking place at the CitizenM Hotel, London from 10.30am – 12.30pm on Thursday 28th April.
