Sky Link, the largest CDMA operator in Russia and in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Alcatel-Lucent announced the signing of an agreement to introduce 3G/CDMA2000 1x-EVDO Revision B radio access network functionality to bring the mobile broadband end-user experience to the next level in Sky Link’s network
The EV-DO Rev. B (Evolution-Data Optimized Revision B), a 3G telecommunications standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, entirely based on IP, will allow Sky Link to increase network capabilities without radio channel widening and will significantly increase data speed rates as from base station to subscriber – up to 6.2 Mbit/s, and also from subscriber to base station – up to 3.9 Mbit/s.
As part of the agreement, Sky Link is also planning to upgrade the EV-DO network it is currently operating in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Krasnodar. Due to be deployed in 2010, Alcatel-Lucent will equip the mobile operator’s existing CDMA base stations with the latest EV-DO Rev. B technology. The next phase of the network development and introduction of the new functionality will enable Sky Link to increase data transmission rates and provide its customers with more comfortable and higher-speed access to mobile Internet-based audio and video content from different devices (computers, laptops, netbooks and other mobile terminals).
“We have successfully been using Alcatel-Lucent’s mobile network equipment in 10 licensed territories for years – covering amongst others our 3 largest and most important regions: Moscow, St. Petersburg and Krasnodar. It is a priority for us to introduce EV-DO Rev.B first in these regions. Thanks to Alcatel-Lucent’s network upgrade, we will be able to realize an increase in network capacity of at least 15% and provide our customers with mobile broadband access services that surpass the competitors offering in data speed and end-user experience,” says Gulnara Khasyanova, ZAO Sky Link’s general director.
