KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu proposed a vision of the ‘wondrous future’ that the fifth generation (5G) telecommunications network will bring about through his keynote speech at the global mobile telecommunications expo ‘Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015.
Hwang, who showed up as the speaker for the ‘The Road to 5G’ session, said, “In the era of Internet of Things(IoT) where everything will be linked via network, ultra-real-time, and ultra-capacity, 5G network is a must in order to allow various different devices to be linked with each other.” He then stressed, “In order to realize 5G, which is the basis of IoT era, cooperation on a global scale is a must.”
The reason Hwang was chosen as the speaker of the 5G session at the world’s biggest mobile expo MWC seems to be due to KT’s being acknowledged for its state-of-art technology across the globe.
Hwang is already well known for having led a mobile innovation in the semiconductor sector represented through ‘Hwang’s Law’ while he served as president of Samsung Electronics. After being appointed as chairman to KT, he again captured the world’s attention through his vision of a brand new future, ‘GiGAtopia’, which will be brought about through the revolution within wired and wireless networks.
During the keynote speech, which proceeded under the theme ‘5G and Beyond, Accelerating the Future’, Hwang succeeding in eliciting agreement from the participants through a video about a self-driving car set for the near future. The video was screened right after his greetings and it even featured the chairman within its story.
In the year 2020, Hwang gets into the self-driving car to get to his workplace. Upon Hwang’s uttering the word ‘the office’ the vehicle starts to move after calculating the optimal route to reach the destination based on using a 5G network. While on the road, Hwang holds a video-conference with business partners in the U.S, China, and Spain. All the references and dialogues get automatically translated. The video ends with Hwang admiring his granddaughter playing a violin through a hologram.
After showing the video, Hwang predicted that in the future, people will no longer need a driver’s license and cars will turn into a ‘mobile office’ that moves around.
Hwang also explained that for the self-driving car to identify and makes sense of the surrounding environment it must be able to process 1GB of information per second. However, to allow billions of vehicles to exchange information at the same time is way too much for the current LTE network to handle. He also went on to underscore that setting up a new network (5G) is a must to handle the vast data traffic of the future.

- Connectivity and capacity just as important as speed for 5G network
Starting from analogue (1G) to 2G, 3G, and 4G (LTE), if the development of telecommunications network evolved mainly around speed in the past, such would not be the case for 5G that realizes IoT and whose development will require improvement in not only in speed, but also in connectivity and capacity.
Hwang explained that in order to exchange vast amounts of information, the network capacity must increase by 1,000 times and must guarantee seamless connectivity as well. A 5G network that would be equipped with all – speed, connectivity and capacity – will precipitate new innovation, he forecasted.
Taking Korea’s LTE as example, Hwang pointed out the change in the network, not only triggered changes in individual lives, but also that of the whole paradigm of the industry. 5G as an infrastructure of innovation will spread to various devices and become the core technology of a creative economy, standing as a window of opportunity for startup ventures.
Hwang, who also proposed the idea of ‘K-Champ’ referring to Korean style hidden champions as first mentioned at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2014 held last October in Busan, Korea, gave his word that he would actively foster such K-Champs that will work as an advance guard for the creative economy. As if to prove that point, KT also included six K-Champs items in its display.
‘Yodoc Service’ that allows one to check possible diseases simply through urine testing, ‘English translation service’ based on Cloud technology, and ‘Electronic blackboard’ which one can use easily with pen and camera attracted much attention from viewers. Starting with the latest display, KT plans to assist K-Champ’s advancement abroad.
Innovative technology that goes beyond the current 4G LTE technology such as massive antennae, utilization of ultra wideband frequency, and the like are required in order for numerous devices to exchange a great amount of information in real time.
KT realized maximum 7.5Gbps speed using massive antennae technology that utilized a bandwidth of 800MHz at 28GHz Millimeter Wave band, which KT has co-developed with Samsung Electronics. In the recent MWC, KT not only limited itself to demonstrating speed, but also showcased holograms, UHD, and others to prove the difference made in the actual contents based on the said technology, thus, captivating viewers.
KT is already a forerunner in the area of 5G core technology, also having co-developed with Ericsson, a ‘HetNet CA technology’ which is a frequency band merging technology for organic interlocking between Small Cellfor the first time in the world. Furthermore, KT has completed the development of D2D(Device to Device) technology necessary for IoT and disaster network with Samsung and Qualcomm is currently in the process of commercializing the technology.
KT is also continually developing its existing technology along with 5G technology. Making a full use of powerful GiGA infrastructure and wireless LTE network, the company currently provides services on par with that of 5G. Such examples include GiGA LTE service and GiGA WiFi service.
Hwang strongly called for the need to jointly foster big data, cloud, set up standard, and offer convergence service in order to prepare for the IoT era based on a 5G network. KT is already in the process of making systematic establishment of GiGA infrastructure, future convergence system, and others under the big and clear vision ‘GiGAtopia.’
Hwang forecasted that 5G would also lend a helping hand in resolving environmental issues and energy problems the importance of which is only growing larger.
KT developed the world’s first total energy management solution called ‘KT-MEG’ which made use of electricity, heat, gas, water, and wind based on telecommunications infrastructure. KT-MEG, which is a micro energy grid, is currently administering energy of 12 major organizations from the U.S., Finland, and other places with smart technology.
KT developed an environmental service that is a result of fusing IoT with big data. By collaborating with eco-friendly business Coway, KT unveiled ‘Smart Air Care Service’, an industrial fusion model that came to be through the combination of IoT and big data, at the latest MWC. KT conducted a pilot test for Smart Air Care Service and made and achieved a discovery that when cooking at home, the density of fine dust in the kitchen can go as high as that of a bus terminal.
Meanwhile, in order to activate IoT industry at an early date, Hwang had also called to set up a global standard for IoT centered on mobile carriers at the ‘2014 Mobile Asia Expo’ held in Shanghai, China in June of last year. At the latest MWC,KT is now extending cooperative ties with global mobile carriers on a more specific level for IoT standardization.
As a case in point, KT together with Spain’s largest telecom ‘Telefonica’, called for unearthing a new growth engine based on IoT and IDE(IoT Data Ecosystem) Project to bring about the new standardization. It has been agreed that the IDE Project will jointly be pursued under ‘Vision 2020’ headed by the world’s mobile telecommunications association known as GSMA (Groupe Speciale Mobile Association). The IDE Project received much support from member companies of GSMA as well as other global ICT companies.

- 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games to mark the opening of a 5G era
KT, which is an official sponsor of 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, is set to demonstrate the future technology ofa 5G era before its time. The nation’s biggest mobile carrier plans to promote Korea’s status in the ICT world by disclosing the wondrous future of 5G for the whole world to see.

A GiGA Stadium, which employs 5G technology and other state-of-art technology, will be erected in Pyeongchang in 2018. GiGA Stadium aims to cut down on energy consumption using KT-MEG technology.
KT will create a Green City out of Pyeongchang City, the destination for the Olympics, using up-to-date energy technology. Other technologies set for demonstration include holograms, 4D, augmented reality (AR), as well as virtual reality (VR) to offer an even more enhanced image of the Olympics Games to the world.
“The future that 5G will bring out isn’t something that can be realized through the efforts of a single company or a country, and thus, global cooperation is a must above all things,” Hwang said. “We need to extend cooperation for standardization through mutual consensus overa roadmap for 5G headed by mobile carriers,” he underlined.

- Broadband Commission for Digital Development (BCDD) to introduce innovative GiGA service to global ICT leaders
Separately, Hwang, ahead of his participation inthe MWC function, attended the regular meeting of Broadband Commission for Digital Development (BCDD) held on Feb. 27 in Paris, France. The Commission jointly established by ITU and UNESCO, is a consultative body participated by the heads of international organizations, CEOs of global ICT companies, and other renowned figures of the academic circle to assist in the affairs related to broadband infrastructure and digital development.
Hwang, who attended the meeting in Paris as the only CEO ofa Korean telecom business, introduced the current status of Korea’s leadingedge GiGA Internet and the innovative GiGA service based on it. He then went on to stress the need to extend such benefits concentrated in cities to lone island and deserted areas. The board members from various nations expressed great interest and support for KT’s GiGA Internet and GiGA Island.
